Gosport's Big Day Out

GOSPORT’S BIG DAY OUT IS A BIG SUCCESS!

Gosport saw thousands of visitors flock to its attractions in the second Gosport’s Big Day Out, which took place on Sunday 14th June.

The event, organised on behalf of the Gosport Partnership, followed the formula established last year in which local tourist attractions provided free or discounted entry to local residents. From treasure hunts, harbour tours and open top bus rides to pond-dipping, fishing and walks, Gosport came alive as residents and visitors got out and about to enjoy the fantastic weather and scenery.

The heritage of the Borough was celebrated as Fort Brockhurst, Haslar, Daedalus and local museums opened their doors, with a host of other venues offering the opportunity to sample something different.  Over 15,000 people took advantage of what was on offer to create their own special day out. As one delighted resident commenting: “Wow! What a day we had. We couldn’t get round to everything, but we had a jolly good try. A brilliant day out.”

Thousands then joined in the family fun from 4.00-8.00 pm at Stokes Bay; with the sunshine and music helping to create a party atmosphere. The Big Noise Samba band drew in the crowds, who picnic-ed to the sounds of the blue jazz trio, the Gosport Amateur Operatic Society and a mix of chart hits, all compered by Wave 105’s Rick Jackson. Games, bouncy castles and a fly-past by the Coastguard were topped off with superb performances by the Gosport’s got Talent finalists.

Wave 105’s Rick Jackson said: “The event was a huge success, which was down to the organisers who worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day. It was a good opportunity for people to get out and about and make the most of their surroundings and to find out about the local area. The weather was great too!”
